Wunst 'way West in IllinoiseA
Wuz two Bears an' their two boysA
An' the two boys' names you knowB
Wuz like ours is Jim an' JoB
An' their parunts' names wuz same'sA
All big grown up people's namesA
Ist Miz Bear the neighbers callC
'Em an' Mister Bear 'at's allC
Yes an' Miz Bear scold him tooD
Ist like grown folks shouldn't doD

Wuz a grea' big river thereE
An' 'crosst that 's a mountain whereE
Old Bear said some day he'd goB
Ef she don't quit scoldin'soA
So one day when he been downF
The river fishin' 'most to townF
An' come back 'thout no fish a tallC
An' Jim an' Jo they run an' bawlC
An' tell their ma their pa hain't fetch'G
No fish she scold again an' ketchG
Her old broom up an' biff him tooD

An' he ist cry an' say ' Boo hooD
I told you what I 'd do some day' '-
An' he ist turned an' runned awayH
To where's the grea' big river thereE
An' ist splunged in an' swum to whereE
The mountain's at 'way th'other sideI
An' clumbed up there An' Miz Bear criedI
An' little Jo an' little JimJ
Ist like their ma bofe cried fer himJ
But he clumbed on clean out o' sightK
He wuz so mad An' served 'em rightK

Nen when the Bear got 'way on topL
The mountain he heerd somepin' flopL
Its wings an' somepin' else he heerdK
A rattlin' like An' he wuz skeerdK
An' looked 'way up an' Mercy sakeM

It wuz a' Eagul an' a SNAKEM
An' sir the Snake he bite an' kill'C
The Eagul an' they bofe fall tillC
They strike the ground k'spang k'spatK
Wite where the Bear wuz standin' atK
An' when here come the Snake at himJ
The Bear he think o' little JimJ
An' Jo he did an' their ma tooK
All safe at home an' he ist flewK
Back down the mountain an' could hearN
The old Snake rattlin' sharp an' clearO
Wite clos't behind An' Bear he's soA
All tired out by time you knowA
He git down to the river thereE
He know' he can't swim back to whereE
His folks is at But ist wite nenA
He see a boat an' six big menA

'At's been a shootin' ducks An' soA
He skeerd them out the boat you knowA
An' ist jumped in an' Snake he triedK
To jump in too but failed outsideK
Where all the water wuz an' soA
The Bear grabs one the things you rowA
The boat wiv an' ist whacks the headK
Of the old Snake an' kills him deadK

An' when he's killed him dead w'y nenA
The old Snake's drownded dead againA
Nen Bear set in the boat an' bowedK
His back an' rowed an' rowed an' rowedK
Till he's safe home so tired he can'tK
Do nothin' but lay there an' pantK
An' tell his childern 'Bresh my coat '-
An' tell his wife 'Go chain my boat '-
An' they're so glad he's back they sayH
'They knowed he's comin' thatawayH
To ist surprise the dear ones there '-
An' Jim an' Jo they dried his hairE

An' pulled the burrs out an' their maP
She ist set there an' helt his pawQ
Till he wuz sound asleep an' nenA
She tell' him she won't scold againA
Never never neverR

Scott King: My Dad used to read us poems by JWR when we were little. My favorites were The Raggety man and Little Orphan Aunty. I do remember the above poem as well.
Karen Sabo: Yes! I had so many nightmares about being chased by a bear, but I always asked for my dad to read it to me every night. Silly me :)
