Rhyme Scheme: AABCCBB BBDEEDFF GGGAHHIIA JJKLLKK AAMNNM OO

In a backwoods townA
Lived Deacon BrownA
And he was a miser oldB
He would trust no bankC
So he dug and sankC
In the ground a box of goldB
Down deep in the ground a box of goldB
-
He hid his goldB
As has been toldB
He remembered that he did itD
But sad to sayE
On the very next dayE
He forgot just where he hid itD
To find his gold he tried and triedF
Till he grew faint and sick and diedF
-
Then on each dark and gloomy nightG
A form in phosphorescent whiteG
A genuine hair raising sightG
Would wander through the townA
And as it slowly roamed aroundH
With a spade it dug each foot of groundH
So the folks aboutI
Said there was no doubtI
'Twas the ghost of Deacon BrownA
-
Around the churchJ
This Ghost would searchJ
And whenever it would seeK
The passers byL
Take wings and flyL
It would laugh in ghostly gleeK
Hee hee it would laugh in ghostly gleeK
-
And so the townA
Went quickly downA
For they said that it was hauntedM
And doors and gatesN
So the story statesN
Bore a notice Tenants wantedM
-
And the town is now for letO
But the ghost is digging yetO
