Ghosts Of The Old Year Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAABCCCB DDDAEEEA FFFAAAAA GGGAHHHA

The snow has ceased its fluttering flightA
The wind sunk to a whisper lightA
An ominous stillness fills the nightA
A pause a hushB
At last a sound that breaks the spellC
Loud clanging mouthings of a bellC
That through the silence peal and swellC
And roll and rushB
-
What does this brazen tongue declareD
That falling on the midnight airD
Brings to my heart a sense of careD
Akin to frightA
'Tis telling that the year is deadE
The New Year come the Old Year fledE
Another leaf before me spreadE
On which to writeA
-
It tells the deeds that were not doneF
It tells of races never runF
Of victories that were not wonF
Barriers unleapedA
It tells of many a squandered dayA
Of slighted gems and treasured clayA
Of precious stores not laid awayA
Of fields unreapedA
-
And so the years go swiftly byG
Each coming brings ambitions highG
And each departing leaves a sighG
Linked to the pastA
Large resolutions little deedsH
Thus filled with aims unreached life speedsH
Until the blotted record readsH
Failure at lastA
