Fragment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABAB CDCDCD EFEFEF GHGHGH IJIJIJ KLKMKL

The hand of Fate cannot be stayedA
The course of Fate cannot be steeredB
By all the gods that man has madeA
Nor all the devils he has fearedB
Not by the prayers that might be prayedA
In all the temples he has rearedB
-
See In your very midst there dwellC
Ten thousand thousand blacks a wedgeD
Forged in the furnaces of hellC
And sharpened to a cruel edgeD
By wrong and by injustice fellC
And driven by hatred as a sledgeD
-
A wedge so slender at the startE
Just twenty slaves in shackles boundF
And yet which split the land apartE
With shrieks of war and battle soundF
Which pierced the nation's very heartE
And still lies cankering in the woundF
-
Not all the glory of your prideG
Preserved in story and in songH
Can from the judging future hideG
Through all the coming ages longH
That though you bravely fought and diedG
You fought and died for what was wrongH
-
'Tis fixed for them that violateI
The eternal laws naught shall availJ
Till they their error expiateI
Nor shall their unborn children failJ
To pay the full required weightI
Into God's great unerring scaleJ
-
Think not repentance can redeemK
That sin his wages can withdrawL
No think as well to change the schemeK
Of worlds that move in reverent aweM
Forgiveness is an idle dreamK
God is not love no God is lawL
