A
-
-
O brothers mine to day we standB
Where half a century sweeps our kenC
Since God through Lincoln's ready handB
Struck off our bonds and made us menC
-
Just fifty years a winter's dayD
As runs the history of a raceE
Yet as we look back o'er the wayD
How distant seems our starting placeE
-
Look farther back Three centuriesF
To where a naked shivering scoreG
Snatched from their haunts across the seasF
Stood wild eyed on Virginia's shoreG
-
Far far the way that we have trodH
From heathen kraals and jungle densI
To freedmen freemen sons of GodH
Americans and CitizensJ
-
A part of His unknown designK
We've lived within a mighty ageL
And we have helped to write a lineK
On history's most wondrous pageL
-
A few black bondmen strewn alongM
The borders of our eastern coastN
Now grown a race ten million strongM
An upward onward marching hostN
-
Then let us here erect a stoneO
To mark the place to mark the timeP
A witness to God's mercies shownO
A pledge to hold this day sublimeP
-
And let that stone an altar beQ
Whereon thanksgivings we may layD
Where we in deep humilityQ
For faith and strength renewed may prayD
-
With open hearts ask from aboveR
New zeal new courage and new pow'rsJ
That we may grow more worthy ofR
This country and this land of oursJ
-
For never let the thought ariseJ
That we are here on sufferance bareS
Outcasts asylumed 'neath these skiesJ
And aliens without part or shareS
-
This land is ours by right of birthT
This land is ours by right of toilU
We helped to turn its virgin earthT
Our sweat is in its fruitful soilU
-
Where once the tangled forest stoodV
Where flourished once rank weed and thornW
Behold the path traced peaceful woodV
The cotton white the yellow cornW
-
To gain these fruits that have been earnedX
To hold these fields that have been wonY
Our arms have strained our backs have burnedX
Bent bare beneath a ruthless sunY
-
That Banner which is now the typeZ
Of victory on field and floodA2
Remember its first crimson stripeZ
Was dyed by Attucks' willing bloodA2
-
And never yet has come the cryB2
When that fair flag has been assailedC2
For men to do for men to dieB2
That have we faltered or have failedC2
-
We've helped to bear it rent and tornW
Through many a hot breath'd battle breezeJ
Held in our hands it has been borneW
And planted far across the seasJ
-
And never yet O haughty LandB
Let us at least for this be praisedD2
Has one black treason guided handB
Ever against that flag been raisedD2
-
Then should we speak but servile wordsJ
Or shall we hang our heads in shameE2
Stand back of new come foreign hordesJ
And fear our heritage to claimE2
-
No stand erect and without fearF2
And for our foes let this sufficeJ
We've bought a rightful sonship hereG2
And we have more than paid the priceJ
-
And yet my brothers well I knowH2
The tethered feet the pinioned wingsJ
The spirit bowed beneath the blowH2
The heart grown faint from wounds and stingsJ
-
The staggering force of brutish mightI2
That strikes and leaves us stunned and daezdI2
The long vain waiting through the nightI2
To hear some voice for justice raisedI2
-
Full well I know the hour when hopeJ2
Sinks dead and 'round us everywhereS
Hangs stifling darkness and we gropeJ2
With hands uplifted in despairS
-
Courage Look out beyond and seeJ
The far horizon's beckoning spanK2
Faith in your God known destinyJ
We are a part of some great planK2
-
Because the tongues of GarrisonY
And Phillips now are cold in deathL2
Think you their work can be undoneY
Or quenched the fires lit by their breathL2
-
Think you that John Brown's spirit stopsJ
That Lovejoy was but idly slainM2
Or do you think those precious dropsJ
From Lincoln's heart were shed in vainM2
-
That for which millions prayed and sighedI2
That for which tens of thousands foughtI2
For which so many freely diedI2
God cannot let it come to naughtI2
