Rhyme Scheme: A BBCCDEFF GGHHIIBH JKLLHHGG BBBBHHBB MMNNBBOO BBBBPPGG

AFTER THE IRISHA
-
Do not marry Breed asthoreB
That old man whose head is hoarB
As the winter but insteadC
Mate with some young curly headC
He will give to you a childD
He will never leave your sideE
And at morning when you wakeF
Kiss for kiss will give and takeF
-
I wish that I had died I doG
Before I gave my love to youG
Love so lasting that it willH
While I live be with you stillH
And for it what do I getI
Pain and trouble and regretI
The terrors of the aspen treeB
Which the wind shakes fearfullyH
-
If this country could be seenJ
As it ought then you had beenK
Living in a castle grandL
With the ladies of the landL
The friend and foe the gael and gallH
Would be cheering one and allH
For yourself and this is trueG
I would be along with youG
-
You promised 'twas a lie I seeB
When you said you'd come to meB
At the sheep cote I was thereB
And I whistled on the airB
And I gave our settled callH
But you were not there at allH
There was nothing anywhereB
But lambs and birds and sunny airB
-
When it is dark you pass me byM
And when the sun is in the skyM
You pass me also night or dayN
You look away you walk awayN
But if you would come to meB
And say the word of courtesyB
I would close the door and thenO
I'd never let you out againO
-
But do not marry Breed asthoreB
That old man his heart is hoarB
As his head is you can seeB
Winter gripping at his kneeB
His eyes and ears are blear and dimP
How can you expect of himP
To see or hear or pleasure youG
Half as well as I would doG
