Because Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EAEA FGHG AEAE AIAI JAJA KAKA AEAE LMNM

My father and my mother never quarrelledA
They were united in a kind of loveB
As daily as the Sydney Morning HeraldA
Rather than like the eagle or the doveB
-
I never saw them casually touchC
Or show a moment s joy in one anotherD
Why should this matter to me now so muchC
I think it bore more hardly on my motherD
-
Who had more generous feelings to expressE
My father had dammed up his Irish bloodA
Against all drinking praying fecklessnessE
And stiffened into stone and creaking woodA
-
His lips would make a switching sound as thoughF
Spontaneous impulse must be kept at bayG
That it was mainly weakness I see nowH
But then my feelings curled back in dismayG
-
Small things can pit the memory like a cystA
Having seen other fathers greet their sonsE
I put my childish face up to be kissedA
After an absence The rebuff still stunsE
-
My blood The poor man s curt embarrassmentA
At such a delicate proffer of affectionI
Cut like a saw But home the lesson wentA
My tenderness thenceforth escaped detectionI
-
My mother sang Because and Annie LaurieJ
White Wings and other songs her voice was sweetA
I never gave enough and I am sorryJ
But we were all closed in the same defeatA
-
People do what they can they were good peopleK
They cared for us and loved us Once they stoodA
Tall in my childhood as the school the steepleK
How can I judge without ingratitudeA
-
Judgment is simply trying to rejectA
A part of what we are because it hurtsE
The living cannot call the dead collectA
They won t accept the charge and it revertsE
-
It s my own judgment day that I draw nearL
Descending in the past without a clueM
Down to that central deadness the despairN
Older than any hope I ever knewM
