Australian Federata Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFEGHIHJDKD LMHMDNON PQRQSTET HPUPVKCK

AUSTRALIA land of lonely lakeA
And serpent haunted fenB
Land of the torrent and the fireC
And forest sundered menB
Thou art not now as thou shalt beD
When the stern invaders comeE
In the hush before the hurricaneF
The dread before the drumE
A louder thunder shall be heardG
Than echoes on thy shoreH
When o er the blackened basalt cliffsI
The foreign cannon roarH
When the stand is made in the sheoaks shadeJ
When heroes fall for theeD
And the creeks in gloomy gullies runK
Dark crimson to the seaD
-
When under honeysuckles grayL
And wattles swaying goldM
The stalwart arm may strike no moreH
The valiant heart is coldM
When thou shalt know the agonyD
The fever and the strifeN
Of those who wrestle against oddsO
For liberty and lifeN
-
Then is the great Dominion bornP
The seven sisters boundQ
From Sydney s greenly wooded portR
To lone King George s SoundQ
Then shall the islands of the southS
The lands of bloom and snowT
Forth from their isolation comeE
To meet the common foeT
-
Then only then when after warH
Is peace with honour bornP
When from the bosom of the nightU
Comes golden sandalled mornP
When laurelled victory is thineV
And the day of battle doneK
Shall the heart of a mighty people stirC
And Australia be as oneK
