Down to the lighthouse pillarA
nbsp nbsp nbsp The rolling woodland comesB
Gay with the gold of she oaksC
nbsp nbsp nbsp And the green of the stunted gumsB
With the silver grey of honeysuckleD
nbsp nbsp nbsp With the wasted bracken redE
With a tuft of softest emeraldF
nbsp nbsp nbsp And a cloud flecked sky o'erheadF
-
We climbed by ridge and boulderA
nbsp nbsp nbsp Umber and yellow scarredF
Out to the utmost precipiceG
nbsp nbsp nbsp To the point that was ocean barredF
Till we looked below on the fastnessG
nbsp nbsp nbsp Of the breeding eagle's nestF
And Cape Wollomai opened eastwardF
nbsp nbsp nbsp And the Otway on the westF
-
Over the mirror of azureA
nbsp nbsp nbsp The purple shadows creptF
League upon league of rollersH
nbsp nbsp nbsp Landward evermore sweptF
And burst upon gleaming basaltF
nbsp nbsp nbsp And foamed in cranny and crackI
And mounted in sheets of silverA
nbsp nbsp nbsp And hurried reluctant backI
-
And the sea so calm out yonderA
nbsp nbsp nbsp Wherever we turned our eyesJ
Like the blast of an angel's trumpetF
nbsp nbsp nbsp Rang out to the earth and skiesJ
Till the reefs and the rocky rampartsK
nbsp nbsp nbsp Throbbed to the giant frayL
And the gullies and jutting headlandsK
nbsp nbsp nbsp Were bathed in a misty sprayL
-
Oh sweet in the distant rangesK
nbsp nbsp nbsp To the ear of inland menM
Is the ripple of falling waterA
nbsp nbsp nbsp In sassafras haunted glenM
The stir in the ripening cornfieldF
nbsp nbsp nbsp That gently rustles and swellsK
The wind in the wattle sighingN
nbsp nbsp nbsp The tinkle of cattle bellsK
-
But best is the voice of oceanO
nbsp nbsp nbsp That strikes to the heart and brainP
That lulls with its passionate musicQ
nbsp nbsp nbsp Trouble and grief and painP
That murmurs the requiem sweetestF
nbsp nbsp nbsp For those who have loved and lostF
And thunders a jubilant anthemR
nbsp nbsp nbsp To brave hearts tempest tossedF
-
That takes to its boundless bosomR
nbsp nbsp nbsp The burden of all our careS
That whispers of sorrow vanquishedF
nbsp nbsp nbsp Of hours that may yet be fairS
That tells of a Harbour of RefugeT
nbsp nbsp nbsp Beyond life's stormy straitsK
Of an infinite peace that gladdensK
nbsp nbsp nbsp Of an infinite love that waitsK
