Shall we to whom the stream by right belongs | B |
Who travel silent save perchance for songs | B |
Whose track's a ripple leaves the Thames a lake | C |
Nor frights the swan scarce makes the rushes shake | C |
Who harmonize exemplify complete | D |
And vivify a scene already sweet | D |
Who travel careless on from lock to lock | E |
Oblivious that the world contains a clock | E |
With pace commensurate to our desires | F |
Propelled by other force than Stygian fire's | F |
Shall we be driven hence to leave a place | G |
For these who bring upon our stream disgrace | G |
The rush the roar the stench the smoke the steam | H |
The nightmare striking through our heavenly dream | H |
The scream as shrill and hateful to the ear | I |
As when a peacock vents his rage and fear | J |
Which churn to fury all a glassy reach | K |
And heave rude breakers on a pebbly beach | K |
Which half o'erwhelm with waves our frailer craft | L |
While graceless shop boys chuckle fore and aft | L |
Foul water toadstools noisome filth stained shapes | M |
Fit only to be manned by dogs and apes | M |
Blots upon nature scars that mar her smile | N |
Obscene obtrusive execrable vile | N |
