From Her Point Of ViewA
-
-
When I had firmly answered NoB
And he allowed that that was soB
I really thought I should be freeC
For good and all from Mr BC
And that he would soberly acquiesceD
I said that it would be discreetE
That for awhile we should not meetE
I promised that I would always feelF
A kindly interest in his wealF
I thanked him for his amorous zealF
In short I said all I could but yesD
-
I said what I'm accustomed toA
I acted as I always doA
I promised he should find in meC
A friend a sister if that might beC
But he was still dissatisfiedG
He certainly was most politeH
He said exactly what was rightH
He acted very properlyC
Except indeed for this that heC
Insisted on inviting meC
To come with him for one more last rideG
-
A little while in doubt I stoodI
A ride no doubt would do me goodI
I had a habit and a hatJ
Extremely well worth looking atJ
The weather was distinctly fineK
My horse too wanted exerciseL
And time when one is riding fliesL
Besides it really seemed you seeC
The only way of ridding meC
Of pertinacious Mr BC
So my head I graciously inclineK
-
I won't say much of what happened nextM
I own I was extremely vexedM
Indeed I should have been aghastN
If any one had seen what passedN
But nobody need ever knowB
That as I leaned forward to stir the fireO
He advanced before I could well retireP
And I suddenly felt to my great alarmQ
The grasp of a warm unlicensed armQ
An embrace in which I found no charmQ
I was awfully glad when he let me goB
-
Then we began to ride my steedR
Was rather fresh too fresh indeedR
And at first I thought of little saveS
The way to escape an early graveS
As the dust rose up on either sideG
My stern companion jogged alongT
On a brown old cob both broad and strongT
He looked as he does when he's writing verseU
Or endeavoring not to swear and curseU
Or wondering Where he has left his purseU
Indeed it was a sombre rideG
-
I spoke of the weather to Mr BC
But he neither listened nor spoke to meC
I praised his horse and I smiled the smileF
Which was wont to move him once in a whileF
I said I was wearing his favorite flowersV
But I wasted my words on the desert airW
For he rode with a fixed and gloomy stareW
I wonder what he was thinking aboutX
As I don't read verse I shan't find outX
It was something subtle and deep no doubtX
A theme to detain a man for hoursV
-
Ah there was the corner where Mr SD
So nearly induced me to whisper yesD
And here it was that the next but oneY
Proposed on horseback or would have doneY
Had his horse not most opportunely shiedG
Which perhaps was due to the unseen flickZ
He received from my whip 'twas a scurvy trickZ
But I never could do with that young manA2
I hope his present young woman canA2
Well I must say never since time beganA2
Did I go for a duller or longer rideG
-
He never smiles and he never speaksB2
He might go on like this for weeksB2
He rolls a slightly frenzied eyeC2
Towards the blue and burning skyC2
And the cob bounds on with tireless strideG
If we aren't home for lunch at twoA
I don't know what papa will doA
But I know full well he will say to meC
I never approved of Mr BC
It's the very devil that you and heC
Ride ride together forever rideG
