Fair was thy blossom tender flowerA
That open'd like the rose in MayB
Though nursed beneath the chilly showerA
Of fell regret for love's decayB
-
How oft thy mother heaved the sighC
O'er wreaths of honour early shornD
Before thy sweet and guiltless eyeC
Had open'd on the dawn of mornD
-
How oft above thy lowly bedE
When all in silence slumber'd lowF
The fond and filial tear was shedE
Thou child of love of shame and woeF
-
Her wrong'd but gentle bosom burn'dG
With joy thy opening bloom to seeH
The only breast that o'er thee yearn'dG
The only heart that cared for theeH
-
Oft her young eye with tear drops brightI
Pleaded with Heaven for her sweet childJ
When faded dreams of past delightI
O'er recollection wander'd wildJ
-
Fair was thy blossom bonnie flowerA
Fair as the softest wreaths of springK
When late I saw thee seek the bowerA
In peace thy morning hymn to singK
-
Thy little foot across the lawnL
Scarce from the primrose press'd the dewM
I thought the spirit of the dawnL
Before me to the greenwood flewM
-
E'en then the shaft was on the wingK
Thy spotless soul from earth to severA
A tear of pity wet the stringK
That twang'd and seal'd thy doom for everA
-
I saw thee late the emblem fairN
Of beauty innocence and truthO
Start tiptoe on the verge of airN
'Twixt childhood and unstable youthO
-
But now I see thee stretch'd at restP
To break that rest shall wake no morrowF
Pale as the grave flower on thy breastP
Poor child of love of shame and sorrowF
-
May thy long sleep be sound and sweetQ
Thy visions fraught with bliss to beH
And long the daisy emblem meetQ
Shall shed its earliest tear o'er theeH
