The angels stood in the court of the KingB
And into the midst through the open doorC
Weeping came one whose broken wingB
Piteously trailed on the golden floorC
-
Angel was she and woman and doveD
Dove and angel all womanly blentE
With the virginal charm that is worshipped of loveD
On the hither side of the firmamentE
-
Where a rainbow hideth the holiest placeF
Thither she moved and there she kneeledE
And fain with her wings would have veiled her faceF
Ere the bow should be lifted and God revealedE
-
'Tis the angels' wont and afresh she weptE
As with maim d pinion she strove in vainG
And tremor on tremor convulsively sweptE
O'er her plumes in a shuddering iris of painG
-
And the angels who dwell from sorrow remoteE
Gazed on her woe as a marvellous thingB
For they wist but of pain from its echoes that floatE
In the strange new songs that the ransomed singB
-
Sister at length said a shining oneH
To whom earth's doves for a care were givenH
What hast thou done or left undoneH
That grief through thee should be known in heavenH
-
When together for joy the angels sangI
Calling the new made world to rejoiceJ
Sweeter than all hosannas that rangI
Was the trembling rapture that thrilled thy voiceJ
-
For thine was the grace to minister thereK
Oh favoured child of the heavenly hostE
To the sacred and lovely lives that wearK
The mystic shape of the Holy GhostE
And we marked thy flight as the flight of a doveD
Till the luminous vapours around thee curledE
And we said She is glad in her errand of loveD
To the happy glades of the new born worldE
-
And now thou returnest woe stricken as oneH
That hath fallen from grace and is unforgivenH
-
What hast thou done or left undoneH
That grief through thee should be known in heavenH
-
Faint was her voice as an echo heardE
From the past by the soul in dreamful moodE
Sweet and sad as the plaint of a birdE
Mourning forlorn in solitudeE
-
I tended my doves she said through her tearsL
By day and by night in storm and calmM
Happily flew the uncounted yearsN
In bowers of myrtle and groves of palmM
-
Many alas were the beautiful deadE
But the life of the race was always newO
For ever ere one generation fledE
Out of its love another grewO
-
And many a dove for man's sake diedE
Noted in heaven with none offenceN
Save when the heart of the cruel took prideE
In slaying the witness of innocenceN
-
When countless seasons had come and goneP
Come and gone as a happy dreamQ
One noon of summer I lingered uponR
The eastward marge of a sacred streamQ
-
And lo 'mid a crowd on the further sideE
That stood in the stream or knelt on the sodE
I saw though a veil of flesh did hideE
The splendour of Godhead the Son of GodE
-
And ev'n as I gazed the azure aboveD
Burst into glory that dimmed the sunH
And the Spirit of God in the form of a doveD
I saw descend on the Holy OneH
-
I deemed that my task was over thenS
'Tis the dawn I said of the reign of loveD
Henceforth my doves will be safe with menS
Since God hath hallowed the form of the doveD
-
Then I soared aloft but again returnedE
For I said in my heart I will not ceaseN
From my care till man from His lips hath learnedE
That the birds have a share in the Gospel of PeaceN
-
And it chanced on a day in the soft springtideE
When birds were joyous and love was sweetE
I saw the Lord on a mountain sideE
-
And with Him were twelve who sat at His feetE
-
And I heard Him say Not a sparrow doth fallT
To the ground but your Father taketh noteE
Then all the air grew musicalU
And song awoke in each warbling throatE
-
For into bird music the message passedE
And from choir to choir in melody ranV
And I said My mission is over at lastE
Farewell my doves Ye are safe with manV
-
Weeping yet gladsome I soared aloftE
Being fain of the glories of other spheresN
Whose beckoning lustre had lured me oftE
In starry midnights of bygone yearsN
-
And on seas of ether and isles of lightE
Through ages of joy I floated or trodE
Till I chanced on an angel in upward flightE
Bearing an infant home to GodE
-
And a waft of earth from the flowers that layW
On the young dead breast came sweet and faintE
And again dream echoed from far awayW
I heard in the woodlands the turtle's plaintE
-
For memory woke at the flowers' sweet breathX
And my spirit yearned to the earth againS
And I cried Canst thou tell oh angel of deathX
How fare my doves at the hands of menS
-
Sad is their lot the angel sighedE
For the pleasure of man they suffer painG
And the heart of the cruel taketh prideE
To slay thy doves and to number the slainG
-
I knew no more till the vapours of earthY
Clung to my wings and a pealing soundE
Smote on mine ear and voices of mirthY
And beneath me a dove fell dead to the groundE
-
Leave me with God for ye cannot knowZ
How death takes shape in the human handE
Nor the subtle devices that work for woeZ
But the Lord will hear and will understandE
-
And if as I clove my unseen wayW
Between my doves and the deadly rainG
It was given unto me to become as theyW
To share their wounds and to know their painG
-
Surely the rather will God give earA2
To one who knoweth what He hath knownB2
Surely the rather will Jesus hearA2
Who suffered as I for love of His ownB2
-
Can it be that the great Lord doth not knowZ
How Christ is needed on earth againS
Rise lingering curtain that I may showZ
The wounds of my doves and may pray for menS
-
-
-
Slowly the rainbow rose parting in twainG
And lo in the midst of the throne of loveD
There stood a Lamb as it had been slainG
And over the throne there brooded a DoveD
