O God the everlasting OneA
In Thee alone from sire to sonA
Through generations all our raceB
Hath found a sure abiding placeB
-
Before the mountains rose from earthC
Before the world itself had birthC
Ere yet the heav'ns were spread abroadD
Thou wast and art eternal GodE
-
But man the creature of Thy breathF
Thou humblest to the deeps of deathF
Few days and sad thou giv'st and thenG
Return Thou say'st ye sons of menG
-
For lo the space of thousand yearsH
To Thine unchanging eye appearsH
As yesterday to mortal sightI
When passed or as a watch of nightI
-
As comes a flood on those who sleepJ
So over man Thy wrath doth sweepJ
As fades the freshness of the grassK
So swiftly doth his vigour passK
-
As grass at morn he flourishethF
Cut down at eve he lies in deathF
Like flame Thy wrath against us burnsL
And all our life to anguish turnsL
-
Thou our iniquities hast setM
Before Thy face unpardon'd yetM
Our secret sins in darkness doneA
Thy light reveals them ev'ry oneA
-
And all our days beneath the blastN
Of Thy consuming wrath are pastN
Our barren lives from year to yearO
Ev'n as an idle tale appearO
In seventy years our race is runA
And what if here and there an oneA
Through greater strength four score attainsP
He only added sorrow gainsP
-
And soon the longest life is o'erQ
We pass away and are no moreR
-
Oh who Thine anger can expressS
Thine ire is as Thine awfulnessT
-
Lord teach us so our days to countU
That as we mark their small amountU
Our hearts we may the more applyV
To learn Thy wisdom ere we dieV
-
Return Oh God How long wilt ThouF
Thy grace withhold Oh even nowF
In mercy hear Thy servant's voiceW
That all our days we may rejoiceW
-
According as the days have beenX
Wherein we have but sorrow seenY
According to our years of illZ
Do Thou our lives with gladness fillZ
-
Give Thou to us Thy works to knowA2
Thy glory to our children showA2
And on Thy servants let there restB2
The beauty of the HoliestC2
-
To all the work we do on earthF
Give Thou O Lord enduring worthF
Yea that our handwork may endureD2
Do Thou Eternal make it sureD2
