Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFGAHIHJJ KLKLMM NONOPP QRQRSS TB TUVV WXWXYY

I had not thought again to beA
A dreamer of such dreams as theseB
The springtime is no more for meA
My summer died beyond the seasB
From what untimely source beginC
These stirrings of the life withinC
-
I had not thought again to tasteD
The bitter sweet the joyous painE
I dreamed that I had trodden wasteD
Beyond the power of sun or rainE
The soil that grew the passion fruitF
Then whence this blossom underfootG
I had not thought again to seeA
Beyond the homely pale of truthH
The lights and shapes of witcheryI
That glorify the skies of youthH
I only know as perished thingsJ
Whence then this flash of angel wingsJ
-
How spend the day yet save the hoursK
I had my day the hours are fledL
How eat the fruit yet hold the flowersK
I ate the fruit the flowers are deadL
Oh what divine or fiendish artM
Hath twined fresh tendrils round my heartM
-
I said 'tis good to be aloneN
No alien hand to urge or checkO
I said my spirit is my ownN
To loose or bind to save or wreckO
I trod on Love called Reason lordP
Lo whence this subtle silken cordP
-
Oh who shall tell if this be strengthQ
Re risen or ghost of old defectR
The truth of manhood come at lengthQ
Or weakness born of purpose wreckedR
I only know it is the wholeS
Arch craving of a hungry soulS
-
I only know that all the hordesT
Of buried hopes and jealousiesB
-
Are risen again and crossing swordsT
And that 'twas but an armisticeU
A breathing time 'twixt strife and strifeV
Which I had deemed a peace for lifeV
-
Oh who can tell where duty liesW
To urge repress advance or stayX
To grasp at Good in Beauty's guiseW
Or brush the pretty lure awayX
Ere doubtful war of hopes and fearsY
Consume the hoarded strength of yearsY
