When in the crimson cloud of EvenA
The lingering light decaysB
And Hesper on the front of HeavenC
His glittering gem displaysB
Deep in the silent vale unseenD
Beside a lulling streamE
A pensive Youth of placid mienD
Indulged this tender themeE
-
Ye cliffs in hoary grandeur piledF
High o'er the glimmering daleG
Ye woods along whose windings wildF
Murmurs the solemn galeG
Where Melancholy strays forlornH
And Wo retires to weepI
What time the wan moon's yellow hornH
Gleams on the western deepI
-
To you ye wastes whose artless charmsJ
Ne'er drew Ambition's eyeK
'Scaped a tumultuous world's alarmsJ
To your retreats I flyK
Deep in your most sequester'd bowerL
Let me at last reclineM
Where Solitude mild modest PowerL
Leans on her ivy'd shrineM
-
How shall I woo thee matchless FairN
Thy heavenly smile how winA
Thy smile that smoothes the brow of CareN
And stills the storm withinA
O wilt thou to thy favourite groveO
Thine ardent votary bringP
And bless his hours and bid them moveQ
Serene on silent wingP
-
Oft let remembrance soothe his mindR
With dreams of former daysB
When in the lap of Peace reclinedR
He framed his infant laysB
When Fancy roved at large nor CareN
Nor cold Distrust alarm'dS
Nor Envy with malignant glareN
His simple youth had harm'dS
-
'Twas then O Solitude to theeT
His early vows were paidU
From heart sincere and warm and freeT
Devoted to the shadeU
Ah why did Fate his steps decoyV
In stormy paths to roamW
Remote from all congenial joyV
O take the wanderer homeW
-
Thy shades thy silence now be mineM
Thy charms my only themeE
My haunt the hollow cliff whose pineM
Waves o'er the gloomy streamE
Whence the sacred owl on pinions grayX
Breaks from the lone vale sails awayX
To more profound reposeY
-
O while to thee the woodland poursZ
Its wildly warbling songA2
And balmy from the banks of flowersB2
The zephyr breathes alongA2
Let no rude sounds invade from farC2
No vagrant foot be nighK
No ray from Grandeur's gilded carC2
Flash on the startled eyeK
-
But if some pilgrim through the gladeU
Thy hallow'd bowers exploreD2
O guard from harm his hoary headE2
And listen to his loreD2
For he of joys divine shall tellF2
That wean from earthly woG2
And triumph o'er the mighty spellF2
That chains this heart belowG2
-
For me no more the path invitesH2
Ambition loves to treadE2
No more I climb those toilsome heightsH2
By guileful Hope misledE2
Leaps my fond fluttering heart no moreD2
To mirth's enlivening strainI2
For present pleasure soon is o'erL
And all the past is vainI2
