IA
Peace heaven descended maid whose powerful voiceB
From ancient darkness call'd the mornC
And hush'd of jarring elements the noiseD
When Chaos from his old dominion tornC
With all his bellowing throngE
Far far was hurl'd the void abyss alongE
And all the bright angelic choirF
Striking through all their ranks the eternal lyreG
Pour'd in loud symphony the impetuous strainH
And every fiery orb and planet sungI
And wide through Night's dark solitary reignH
Rebounding long and deep the lays triumphant rungI
-
IA
Oh whither art thou fled Saturnian AgeJ
Roll round again majestic yearsK
To break the sceptre of tyrannic rageJ
From Woe's wan cheek to wipe the bitter tearsL
Ye years again roll roundM
Hark from afar what desolating soundM
While echoes load the sighing galesN
With dire presage the throbbing heart assailsN
Murder deep roused with all the whirl wind's hasteO
And roar of tempest from her cavern springsP
Her tangled serpents girds around her waistO
Smiles ghastly fierce and shakes her gore distilling wingsP
-
IA
The shouts redoubling riseQ
In thunder to the skiesQ
The nymphs disordered dart alongE
Sweet powers of solitude and songE
Stunn'd with the horros of discordant soundM
And all is listening trembling roundM
Torrents far heard amid the waste of nightR
That oft have led the wanderer rightR
Are silent at the noiseD
The mighty Ocean's more majestic voiceB
Drown'd in superior din is heard no moreS
The surge in silence seems to sweep the foamy shoreS
-
IIA
The bloody banner streaming in the airT
Seen on yon sky mix'd mountain's browU
The mingling multitudes the madding carV
Driven in confusion to the plain belowW
War's dreadful Lord proclaimX
Bursts out by frequent fits the expansive flameX
Snatch'd in tempestuous eddies fliesQ
The surging smoke o'er all the darken'd skiesQ
The cheerful face of heaven no more is seenY
The bloom of morning of morning fades to deadly paleZ
The bat flies transient o'er the dusky greenY
And Night's foul birds along the sullen twilight sailZ
-
IIA
Involved in fire streak'd gloom the car comes onA2
The rushing steeds grim Terror guidesB2
His forehead writhed to a relentless frownC2
Aloft the angry Power of Battles ridesB2
Grasped in his mighty handD2
A mace tremendous desolates the landD2
The tower rolls headlong down the steepE2
The mountain shrinks before its wasteful sweepE2
Chill horror the dissolving limbs invadesF2
Smit by the blasting lightning of his eyesQ
A deeper gloom invests the howling shadesF2
Stripp'd is the shatter'd grove and every verdure diesQ
-
IIA
How startled Phrenzy staresL
Bristling her ragged hairsL
Revenge the gory fragment gnawsG2
See with her griping vulture clawsG2
Imprinted deep she rends the mangled woundM
Hate whirls her torch sulphureous roundM
The shrieks of agony and clang of armsH2
Re echo to the hoarse alarmsH2
Her trump terrific blowsI2
Disparting from behind the clouds discloseI2
Of kingly gesture a gigantic formJ2
That with his scourge sublime rules the careering stormJ2
-
IIIA
Ambition outside fair within as foulK2
As fiends of fiercest heart belowW
Who rides the hurricanes of fire that rollL2
Their thundering vortex o'er the realms of woW
Yon naked waste surveyM2
Where late was heard the flute's mellifluous layM2
Where late the rosy bosom'd hoursN2
In loose array danced lightly o'er the flowersN2
Where late the shepherd told his tender taleZ
And waken'd by the murmuring breeze of mornC
The voice of cheerful Labour fill'd the daleZ
And dove eyed Plenty smiled and waved her liberal hornC
-
IIIA
Yon ruins sable from the wasting flameX
But mark the once resplendent domeO2
The frequent corse obstructs the sullen streamP2
And ghosts glare horrid from the sylvan gloomQ2
How sadly silent allR2
Save where outstretch'd beneath yon hanging wallR2
Pale Famine moans with feeble breathS2
And Anguish yells and grinds his bloody teethT2
Though vain the muse and every melting layM2
To touch thy heart unconscious of remorseU2
Know monster know thy hour is on the wayM2
I see I see the years begin their mighty courseU2
-
IIIA
What scenes of glory riseQ
Before my dazzled eyesQ
Young zephyrs wave their wanton wingsP
And melody celestial ringsP
All blooming on the lawn the nymphs advanceV2
And touch the lute and range the danceV2
And the blithe shepherds on the mountain's sideW2
Array'd in all their rural prideW2
Exalt the festive noteX2
Inviting Echo from her inmost grotX2
But ah the landscape glows with fainter lightX2
It darkens swims and flies for ever from my sightX2

Illusions vain Can sacredX2
PeaceY2
resideX2
Where sordid gold the breast alarmsH2
Where Cruelty inflames the eye of PrideX2
And Grandeur wantons in soft Pleasure's armsH2
Ambition these are thineZ2
These from the soul erase the form divineZ2
And quench the animating fireF
That warms the bosom with sublime desireF
Thence the relentless heart forgets to feelA3
And Hatred triumphs on the o'erwhelming browU
And midnight Rancour grasps the cruel steelA3
Blaze the blue flames of death and sound the shrieks of woW
-
IVM2
From Albion fled thy once beloved retreatX2
What regions brighten in thy smileB3
CreativeM2
PeaceY2
and underneath thy feetX2
See sudden flowers adorn the rugged soilC3
In bleak Siberia blowsI2
Waked by the genial breath the balmy roseI2
Waved over by the magic wandX2
Does life inform fell Lybia's burning sandX2
O does some isle thy parting flight detainH
Where roves the Indian through primaeval shadesF2
Haunts the pure pleasures of the sylvan reignH
And led by Reason's light the path of Nature treadsD3
-
IVM2
On Cuba's utmost steepE2
Far leaning o'er the deepE2
The Goddess' pensive form was seenY
Her robe of Nature's varied greenY
Waved on the gale grief dimm'd her radiant eyesQ
Her bosom heaved with boding sighsQ
She eyed the main where gaining on the viewM2
Emerging from the ethereal blueM2
'Midst the dread of pomp of warS
Blazed the Iberian streamer from afarV
She saw and on refulgent pinions borneC
Slow wing'd her way sublime and mingled with the mornC
