Peace heaven descended maid whose powerful voice | B |
From ancient darkness call'd the morn | C |
And hush'd of jarring elements the noise | D |
When Chaos from his old dominion torn | C |
With all his bellowing throng | E |
Far far was hurl'd the void abyss along | E |
And all the bright angelic choir | F |
Striking through all their ranks the eternal lyre | G |
Pour'd in loud symphony the impetuous strain | H |
And every fiery orb and planet sung | I |
And wide through Night's dark solitary reign | H |
Rebounding long and deep the lays triumphant rung | I |

I | A |
Oh whither art thou fled Saturnian Age | J |
Roll round again majestic years | K |
To break the sceptre of tyrannic rage | J |
From Woe's wan cheek to wipe the bitter tears | L |
Ye years again roll round | M |
Hark from afar what desolating sound | M |
While echoes load the sighing gales | N |
With dire presage the throbbing heart assails | N |
Murder deep roused with all the whirl wind's haste | O |
And roar of tempest from her cavern springs | P |
Her tangled serpents girds around her waist | O |
Smiles ghastly fierce and shakes her gore distilling wings | P |
- | |
I | A |
The shouts redoubling rise | Q |
In thunder to the skies | Q |
The nymphs disordered dart along | E |
Sweet powers of solitude and song | E |
Stunn'd with the horros of discordant sound | M |
And all is listening trembling round | M |
Torrents far heard amid the waste of night | R |
That oft have led the wanderer right | R |
Are silent at the noise | D |
The mighty Ocean's more majestic voice | B |
Drown'd in superior din is heard no more | S |
The surge in silence seems to sweep the foamy shore | S |
- | |
II | A |
The bloody banner streaming in the air | T |
Seen on yon sky mix'd mountain's brow | U |
The mingling multitudes the madding car | V |
Driven in confusion to the plain below | W |
War's dreadful Lord proclaim | X |
Bursts out by frequent fits the expansive flame | X |
Snatch'd in tempestuous eddies flies | Q |
The surging smoke o'er all the darken'd skies | Q |
The cheerful face of heaven no more is seen | Y |
The bloom of morning of morning fades to deadly pale | Z |
The bat flies transient o'er the dusky green | Y |
And Night's foul birds along the sullen twilight sail | Z |
- | |
II | A |
Involved in fire streak'd gloom the car comes on | A2 |
The rushing steeds grim Terror guides | B2 |
His forehead writhed to a relentless frown | C2 |
Aloft the angry Power of Battles rides | B2 |
Grasped in his mighty hand | D2 |
A mace tremendous desolates the land | D2 |
The tower rolls headlong down the steep | E2 |
The mountain shrinks before its wasteful sweep | E2 |
Chill horror the dissolving limbs invades | F2 |
Smit by the blasting lightning of his eyes | Q |
A deeper gloom invests the howling shades | F2 |
Stripp'd is the shatter'd grove and every verdure dies | Q |
- | |

How startled Phrenzy stares | L |
Bristling her ragged hairs | L |
Revenge the gory fragment gnaws | G2 |
See with her griping vulture claws | G2 |
Imprinted deep she rends the mangled wound | M |
Hate whirls her torch sulphureous round | M |
The shrieks of agony and clang of arms | H2 |
Re echo to the hoarse alarms | H2 |
Her trump terrific blows | I2 |
Disparting from behind the clouds disclose | I2 |
Of kingly gesture a gigantic form | J2 |
That with his scourge sublime rules the careering storm | J2 |
- | |
III | A |
Ambition outside fair within as foul | K2 |
As fiends of fiercest heart below | W |
Who rides the hurricanes of fire that roll | L2 |
Their thundering vortex o'er the realms of wo | W |
Yon naked waste survey | M2 |
Where late was heard the flute's mellifluous lay | M2 |
Where late the rosy bosom'd hours | N2 |
In loose array danced lightly o'er the flowers | N2 |
Where late the shepherd told his tender tale | Z |
And waken'd by the murmuring breeze of morn | C |
The voice of cheerful Labour fill'd the dale | Z |
And dove eyed Plenty smiled and waved her liberal horn | C |
- | |

Yon ruins sable from the wasting flame | X |
But mark the once resplendent dome | O2 |
The frequent corse obstructs the sullen stream | P2 |
And ghosts glare horrid from the sylvan gloom | Q2 |
How sadly silent all | R2 |
Save where outstretch'd beneath yon hanging wall | R2 |
Pale Famine moans with feeble breath | S2 |
And Anguish yells and grinds his bloody teeth | T2 |
Though vain the muse and every melting lay | M2 |
To touch thy heart unconscious of remorse | U2 |
Know monster know thy hour is on the way | M2 |
I see I see the years begin their mighty course | U2 |

What scenes of glory rise | Q |
Before my dazzled eyes | Q |
Young zephyrs wave their wanton wings | P |
And melody celestial rings | P |
All blooming on the lawn the nymphs advance | V2 |
And touch the lute and range the dance | V2 |
And the blithe shepherds on the mountain's side | W2 |
Array'd in all their rural pride | W2 |
Exalt the festive note | X2 |
Inviting Echo from her inmost grot | X2 |
But ah the landscape glows with fainter light | X2 |
It darkens swims and flies for ever from my sight | X2 |

Illusions vain Can sacred | X2 |
Peace | Y2 |
reside | X2 |
Where sordid gold the breast alarms | H2 |
Where Cruelty inflames the eye of Pride | X2 |
And Grandeur wantons in soft Pleasure's arms | H2 |
Ambition these are thine | Z2 |
These from the soul erase the form divine | Z2 |
And quench the animating fire | F |
That warms the bosom with sublime desire | F |
Thence the relentless heart forgets to feel | A3 |
And Hatred triumphs on the o'erwhelming brow | U |
And midnight Rancour grasps the cruel steel | A3 |
Blaze the blue flames of death and sound the shrieks of wo | W |

From Albion fled thy once beloved retreat | X2 |
What regions brighten in thy smile | B3 |

Peace | Y2 |
and underneath thy feet | X2 |

In bleak Siberia blows | I2 |
Waked by the genial breath the balmy rose | I2 |
Waved over by the magic wand | X2 |
Does life inform fell Lybia's burning sand | X2 |
O does some isle thy parting flight detain | H |
Where roves the Indian through primaeval shades | F2 |
Haunts the pure pleasures of the sylvan reign | H |
And led by Reason's light the path of Nature treads | D3 |
- | |
IV | M2 |
On Cuba's utmost steep | E2 |
Far leaning o'er the deep | E2 |
The Goddess' pensive form was seen | Y |
Her robe of Nature's varied green | Y |
Waved on the gale grief dimm'd her radiant eyes | Q |
Her bosom heaved with boding sighs | Q |
She eyed the main where gaining on the view | M2 |
Emerging from the ethereal blue | M2 |
'Midst the dread of pomp of war | S |
Blazed the Iberian streamer from afar | V |
She saw and on refulgent pinions borne | C |
Slow wing'd her way sublime and mingled with the morn | C |
