When Peter Wanderwide was youngA
He wandered everywhere he wouldB
All that he approved was sungA
And most of what he saw was goodB
-
When Peter Wanderwide was thrownC
By Death himself beyond AuxerreD
He chanted in heroic toneC
To priests and people gathered thereD
-
If all that I have loved and seenE
Be with me on the Judgment DayF
I shall be saved the crowd betweenE
From Satan and his foul arrayF
-
Almighty God will surely cryD
'St Michael Who is this that standsG
With Ireland in his dubious eyeD
And Perigord between his handsG
-
'And on his arm the stirrup thongsG
And in his gait the narrow seasG
And in his mouth Burgundian songsG
But in his heart the Pyrenees '-
-
St Michael then will answer rightH
And not without angelic shameI
'I seem to know his face by sightH
I cannot recollect his name '-
-
St Peter will befriend me thenJ
Because my name is Peter tooK
'I know him for the best of menJ
That ever walloped barley brewK
-
'And though I did not know him wellL
And though his soul were clogged with sinM
I hold the keys of Heaven and HellL
Be welcome noble Peterkin '-
-
Then shall I spread my native wingsG
And tread secure the heavenly floorD
And tell the blessed doubtful thingsG
Of Val d'Aran and PerigordK
-
-
-
This was the last and solemn jestK
Of weary Peter WanderwideK
He spoke it with a failing zestK
And having spoken it he diedK
