AugustA
-
-
O mystery of noble heartsB
To whom mysterious seas have beenC
In midnight watches lonely calm and stormD
A stern sad discipleE
And rooted out the false and vainF
And chastened them to aptness forG
Devotion and the deeds of warG
And death which smiles and cheers in spite of painF
-
Beyond the bar the land wind diesH
The prows becharmed at anchor swimI
A summer night the stars withdrawn look downJ
Fair eve of battle grimI
The sentries pace bonetas glideK
Below the sleeping sailor swingL
And it their dreams to quarters springL
Or cheer their flag or breast a stormy tideK
-
But drums are beat Up anchor allM
The triple lines steam slowly onN
Day breaks and through the sweep of decks each manO
Stands coldly by his gunP
As cold as it But he shall warmD
Warm with the solemn metal thereQ
And all its ordered fury shareQ
In attitude a gladiatorial formD
-
The Admiral yielding the the loveR
Which held his life and ship so dearS
Sailed second in the long fleet's midmost lineT
Yet thwarted all their careQ
He lashed himself aloft and shoneU
Star of the fight with influence sentV
Throughout the dusk embattlementV
And so they neared the strait and walls of stoneU
-
No sprintly fife as in the fieldV
The decks were hushed like fanes in prayerQ
Behind each man a holy angel stoodV
He stood though none was 'wareQ
Out spake the forts on either handV
Back speak the ships when spoken toV
And set their flags in concert trueV
And On and in is Farragut's commandV
-
But what delays 'mid wounds aboveR
Dim buoys give hint of death belowW
Sea ambuscades where evil art had apedV
Hecla that hides in snowW
The centre van entangled tripsX
The starboard leader holds straight onN
A cheer for the Tecumseh nayY
Before their eyes the turreted ship goes downJ
-
The fire redoubles While the fleetV
Hangs dubious ere the horror ranO
The Admiral rushes to his rightful placeZ
Well met apt hour and manO
Closes with peril takes the leadV
His action is a stirring callM
He strikes his great heart through them allM
And is the genius of their daring deedV
-
The forts are daunted slack their fireQ
Confounded by the deadlier aimA2
And rapid broadsides of the speeding fleetV
And fierce denouncing flameA2
Yet shots from four dark hulls embayedV
Come raking through the loyal crewsB2
Whom now each dying mate enduesB2
With his last look anguished yet undismayedV
-
A flowering time to guilt is givenP
And traitors have their glorying hourQ
O late but sure the righteous Paramount comesB2
Palsy is on their powerQ
So proved it with the rebel keelsB2
The strong holds past assailed they runP
The Selma strikes and the work is doneP
The dropping anchor the achievement sealsB2
-
But no she turns the TennesseeB2
The solid Ram of iron and oakC2
Strong as Evil and bold as Wrong though loneU
A pestilence in her smokeC2
The flag ship is her singled markD2
The wooden Hartford Let her comeE2
She challenges the planet of DoomF2
And naught shall save her not her iron barkD2
-
Slip anchor all and at her allM
Bear down with rushing beaks and nowG2
First the Monongahela struck and reeledV
The Lackawana's prowG2
Next crashed crashed but not crashing thenH2
The Admiral rammed and rasping nighI2
Sloped in a broadside which glanced byI2
The Monitors battered at her adamant denH2
-
The Chickasaw plunged beneath the sternJ2
And pounded there a huge wrought orbK2
From the Manhattan pierced one wall but droppedV
Others the seas absorbK2
Yet stormed on all sides narrowed inC
Hampered and cramped the bad one foughtV
Spat ribald curses from the portV
Who shutters jammed locked up this Man of SinC
-
No pause or stay They made a dinC
Like hammers round a boiler forgedV
Now straining strength tangled itself with strengthL2
Till Hate her will disgorgedV
The white flag showed the fight was wonP
Mad shouts went up that shook the BayY
But pale on the scarred fleet's decks there layY
A silent man for every silenced gunP
-
And quiet far below the waveM2
Where never cheers shall move their sleepN2
Some who did boldly nobly earn them lieI2
Charmed children of the deepN2
But decks that now are in the seedV
And cannon yet within the mineT
Shall thrill the deeper gun and pineT
Because of the Tecumseh's glorious deedV
