Rebel Color-bearers At Shiloh Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AA BCDEEEDFFG HHI JJKKKJLLLL MAMBCMAANOPPO

A plea against the vindictive cry raised by civiliansA
shortly after the surrender at AppomattoxA
-
-
The color bearers facing deathB
White in the whirling sulphurous wreathC
Stand boldly out before the lineD
Right and left their glances goE
Proud of each other glorying in their showE
Their battle flags about them blowE
And fold them as in flame divineD
Such living robes are only seenF
Round martyrs burning on the greenF
And martyrs for the Wrong have beenG
-
Perish their Cause but mark the menH
Mark the planted statues thenH
Draw trigger on them if you canI
-
The leader of a patriot bandJ
Even so could view rebels who so could standJ
And this when peril pressed him soreK
Left aidless in the shivered front of warK
Skulkers behind defiant foes beforeK
And fighting with a broken brandJ
The challenge in that courage rareL
Courage defenseless proudly bareL
Never could tempt him he could dareL
Strike up the leveled rifle thereL
-
Sunday at Shiloh and the dayM
When Stonewall charged McClellan'sA
crimson MayM
And Chickamauga's wave of deathB
And of the Wilderness the cypress wreathC
All these have passed awayM
The life in the veins of Treason lagsA
Her daring color bearers drop their flagsA
And yield Now shall we fireN
Can poor spite beO
Shall nobleness in victory less aspireP
Than in reverse Spare Spleen her ireP
And think how Grant met LeeO
