No trophy this a Stone unhewnB
And stands where here the field immuresC
The nameless brave whose palms are wonB
Outcast they sleep yet fame is nighD
Pure fame of deeds not doersC
Nor deeds of men who bleeding dieD
In cheer of hymns that round them floatE
In happy dreams such close the eyeD
But withering famine slowly woreF
And slowly fell disease did gloatE
Even Nature's self did aid denyD
They choked in horror the pensive sighD
Yea off from home sad Memory boreF
Though anguished Yearning heaved that wayG
Lest wreck of reason might befallH
As men in gales shun the lee shoreF
Though there the homestead be and callH
And thitherward winds and waters swayG
As such lorn mariners so fared theyG
But naught shall now their peace molestI
Their fame is this they did endureJ
Endure when fortitude was vainB
To kindle any approving strainB
Which they might hear To these who restI
This healing sleep alone was sureJ

Written prior to the founding of the National Cemetery at Andersonville where of the reinterred captives now sleep each beneath his personal head board inscribed from records found in the prison hospital Some hundreds rest apart and without name A glance at the published pamphlet containing the list of the buried at Andersonville conveys a feeling mournfully impressive Seventy four large double columned page in fine print Looking through them is like getting lost among the old turbaned head stones and cypresses in the interminable Black Forest of Scutari over against ConstantinopleK
