-
Some hearts there are of deeper sortB
Prophetic sadC
Which yet for cause are trebly cladC
Known death they fly onD
This wizard heart and heart of oak had LyonE
-
They are more than twenty thousand strongF
We less than fiveG
Too few with such a host to striveG
Such counsel fie onD
'Tis battle or 'tis shame and firm stood LyonE
-
For help at need in van we waitH
Retreat or fightI
Retreat the foe would take for flightI
And each proud scionE
Feel more elate the end must come said LyonE
-
By candlelight he wrote the willJ
And left his allK
To Her for whom 'twas not enough to fallK
Loud neighed OrionE
Without the tent drums beat we marched with LyonE
-
The night tramp done we spied the ValeL
With guard fires litM
Day broke but trooping clouds made gloom of itM
A field to die onD
Presaged in his unfaltering heart brave LyonE
-
We fought on the grass we bled in the cornN
Fate seemed malignO
His horse the Leader led along the lineO
Star browed OrionE
Bitterly fearless he rallied us there brave LyonE
-
There came a sound like the slitting of airP
By a swift sharp swordQ
A rush of the sound and the sleek chest broadR
Of black OrionE
Heaved and was fixed the dead mane waved toward LyonE
-
General you're hurt this sleet of ballsS
He seemed half spentT
With moody and bloody brow he lowly bentT
The field to die onD
But not not yet the day is long breathed LyonE
-
For a time becharmed there fell a lullU
In the heart of the fightI
The tree tops nod the slain sleep lightI
Warm noon winds sigh onD
And thoughts which he never spake had LyonE
-
Texans and Indians trim for a chargeV
Stand ready menW
Let them come close right up and thenW
After the lead the ironX
Fire and charge back So strength returned to LyonE
-
The Iowa men who held the vanY
Half drilled were newZ
To battle Some one lead us then we'll doZ
Said Corporal TryonE
Men I will lead and a light glared in LyonE
-
On they came they yelped and firedA2
His spirit spedB2
We leveled right in and the half breeds fledB2
Nor stayed the ironX
Nor captured the crimson corse of LyonE
-
This seer foresaw his soldier doomC2
Yet willed the fightI
He never turned his only flightI
Was up to ZionE
Where prophets now and armies greet brave LyonE
