IA
Where the wings of a sunny Dome expandB
I saw a Banner in gladsome airC
Starry like Berenice's HairC
Afloat in broadened bravery thereC
With undulating long drawn flowD
As tolled Brazilian billows goD
Voluminously o'er the LineE
The Land reposed in peace belowD
The children in their gleeF
Were folded to the exulting heartG
Of young MaternityF

Later and it streamed in fightH
When tempest mingled with the frayI
And over the spear point of the shaftJ
I saw the ambiguous lightning playI
Valor with Valor strove and diedK
Fierce was Despair and cruel was PrideK
And the lorn Mother speechless stoodL
Pale at the fury of her broodM

Yet later and the silk did windN
Her fair cold formO
Little availed the shining shroudP
Though ruddy in hue to cheer or warmO
A watcher looked upon her low and saidQ
She sleeps but sleeps she is not deadQ
But in that sleeps contortion showedR
The terror of the vision thereC
A silent vision unavowedR
Revealing earth's foundation bareC
And Gorgon in her hidden placeS
It was a thing of fear to seeF
So foul a dream upon so fair a faceS
And the dreamer lying in that starry shroudR
-
IV-
But from the trance she sudden brokeT
The trance or death into promoted life-
At her feet a shivered yokeT
And in her aspect turned to heavenU
No trace of passion or of strife-
A clear calm look It spake of painV
But such as purifies from stainV
Sharp pangs that never come againW
And triumph repressed by knowledge meetR
Power dedicate and hope grown wiseX
And youth matured for age's seatR
Law on her brow and empire in her eyesX
So she with graver air and lifted flagY
While the shadow chased by lightR
Fled along the far drawn heightR
And left her on the cragY
