I have read in some old marvellous tale	A
Some legend strange and vague	B
That a midnight host of spectres pale	A
Beleaguered the walls of Prague	C

Beside the Moldau's rushing stream	D
With the wan moon overhead	E
There stood as in an awful dream	D
The army of the dead	E

White as a sea fog landward bound	F
The spectral camp was seen	G
And with a sorrowful deep sound	F
The river flowed between	G

No other voice nor sound was there	H
No drum nor sentry's pace	I
The mist like banners clasped the air	H
As clouds with clouds embrace	I

But when the old cathedral bell	J
Proclaimed the morning prayer	H
The white pavilions rose and fell	J
On the alarmed air	H

Down the broad valley fast and far	K
The troubled army fled	E
Up rose the glorious morning star	K
The ghastly host was dead	E
