Once more once more InarimA
I see thy purple hills once moreB
I hear the billows of the bayC
Wash the white pebbles on thy shoreB
-
High o'er the sea surge and the sandsD
Like a great galleon wrecked and castE
Ashore by storms thy castle standsD
A mouldering landmark of the PastE
-
Upon its terrace walk I seeF
A phantom gliding to and froG
It is Colonna it is sheF
Who lived and loved so long agoG
-
Pescara's beautiful young wifeH
The type of perfect womanhoodI
Whose life was love the life of lifeH
That time and change and death withstoodI
-
For death that breaks the marriage bandJ
In others only closer pressedK
The wedding ring upon her handJ
And closer locked and barred her breastK
-
She knew the life long martyrdomA
The weariness the endless painL
Of waiting for some one to comeA
Who nevermore would come againM
-
The shadows of the chestnut treesN
The odor of the orange bloomsO
The song of birds and more than theseN
The silence of deserted roomsO
-
The respiration of the seaF
The soft caresses of the airP
All things in nature seemed to beF
But ministers of her despairP
-
Till the o'erburdened heart so longQ
Imprisoned in itself found ventR
And voice in one impassioned songQ
Of inconsolable lamentR
-
Then as the sun though hidden from sightS
Transmutes to gold the leaden mistT
Her life was interfused with lightS
From realms that though unseen existT
-
Inarim InarimA
Thy castle on the crags aboveU
In dust shall crumble and decayC
But not the memory of her loveU
