Under the walls of MontereyA
At daybreak the bugles began to playA
Victor GalbraithB
In the mist of the morning damp and grayA
These were the words they seemed to sayA
Come forth to thy deathC
Victor GalbraithB
-
Forth he came with a martial treadD
Firm was his step erect his headD
Victor GalbraithB
He who so well the bugle playedE
Could not mistake the words it saidD
Come forth to thy deathC
Victor GalbraithB
-
He looked at the earth he looked at the skyF
He looked at the files of musketryA
Victor GalbraithB
And he said with a steady voice and eyeF
Take good aim I am ready to dieF
Thus challenges deathC
Victor GalbraithB
-
Twelve fiery tongues flashed straight and redD
Six leaden balls on their errand spedD
Victor GalbraithB
Falls to the ground but he is not deadD
His name was not stamped on those balls of leadD
And they only scathB
Victor GalbraithB
-
Three balls are in his breast and brainG
But he rises out of the dust againH
Victor GalbraithB
The water he drinks has a bloody stainG
O kill me and put me out of my painG
In his agony prayethB
Victor GalbraithB
-
Forth dart once more those tongues of flameI
And the bugler has died a death of shameI
Victor GalbraithB
His soul has gone back to whence it cameI
And no one answers to the nameI
When the Sergeant saithB
Victor GalbraithB
-
Under the walls of MontereyA
By night a bugle is heard to playA
Victor GalbraithB
Through the mist of the valley damp and grayA
The sentinels hear the sound and sayA
That is the wraithB
Of Victor GalbraithB
