I see amid the fields of AyrA
A ploughman who in foul and fairB
Sings at his taskC
So clear we know not if it isD
The laverock's song we hear or hisD
Nor care to askC
-
For him the ploughing of those fieldsE
A more ethereal harvest yieldsE
Than sheaves of grainF
Songs flush with purple bloom the ryeG
The plover's call the curlew's cryG
Sing in his brainF
-
Touched by his hand the wayside weedH
Becomes a flower the lowliest reedH
Beside the streamI
Is clothed with beauty gorse and grassJ
And heather where his footsteps passJ
The brighter seemI
-
He sings of love whose flame illumesJ
The darkness of lone cottage roomsJ
He feels the forceJ
The treacherous undertow and stressJ
Of wayward passions and no lessJ
The keen remorseJ
-
At moments wrestling with his fateK
His voice is harsh but not with hateK
The brushwood hungL
Above the tavern door lets fallM
Its bitter leaf its drop of gallM
Upon his tongueL
-
But still the music of his songN
Rises o'er all elate and strongN
Its master chordsJ
Are Manhood Freedom BrotherhoodO
Its discords but an interludeP
Between the wordsJ
-
And then to die so young and leaveQ
Unfinished what he might achieveQ
Yet better sureR
Is this than wandering up and downS
An old man in a country townS
Infirm and poorT
-
For now he haunts his native landU
As an immortal youth his handU
Guides every ploughV
He sits beside each ingle nookW
His voice is in each rushing brookW
Each rustling boughV
-
His presence haunts this room to nightX
A form of mingled mist and lightX
From that far coastY
Welcome beneath this roof of mineZ
Welcome this vacant chair is thineZ
Dear guest and ghostY
