To The River Charles Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GAGA EHEH BIBI BJBJ BABA KAKA EBEB

River that in silence windestA
Through the meadows bright and freeB
Till at length thy rest thou findestA
In the bosom of the seaB
-
Four long years of mingled feelingC
Half in rest and half in strifeD
I have seen thy waters stealingC
Onward like the stream of lifeD
-
Thou hast taught me Silent RiverE
Many a lesson deep and longF
Thou hast been a generous giverE
I can give thee but a songF
-
Oft in sadness and in illnessG
I have watched thy current glideA
Till the beauty of its stillnessG
Overflowed me like a tideA
-
And in better hours and brighterE
When I saw thy waters gleamH
I have felt my heart beat lighterE
And leap onward with thy streamH
-
Not for this alone I love theeB
Nor because thy waves of blueI
From celestial seas above theeB
Take their own celestial hueI
-
Where yon shadowy woodlands hide theeB
And thy waters disappearJ
Friends I love have dwelt beside theeB
And have made thy margin dearJ
-
More than this thy name reminds meB
Of three friends all true and triedA
And that name like magic binds meB
Closer closer to thy sideA
-
Friends my soul with joy remembersK
How like quivering flames they startA
When I fan the living embersK
On the hearth stone of my heartA
-
'T is for this thou Silent RiverE
That my spirit leans to theeB
Thou hast been a generous giverE
Take this idle song from meB
