See the fire is sinking lowA
Dusky red the embers glowA
While above them still I cowerB
While a moment more I lingerB
Though the clock with lifted fingerB
Points beyond the midnight hourB
-
Sings the blackened log a tuneC
Learned in some forgotten JuneC
From a school boy at his playD
When they both were young togetherB
Heart of youth and summer weatherB
Making all their holidayD
-
And the night wind rising harkE
How above there in the darkE
In the midnight and the snowA
Ever wilder fiercer granderB
Like the trumpets of IskanderB
All the noisy chimneys blowA
-
Every quivering tongue of flameF
Seems to murmur some great nameF
Seems to say to me AspireB
But the night wind answers HollowA
Are the visions that you followA
Into darkness sinks your fireB
-
Then the flicker of the blazeG
Gleams on volumes of old daysG
Written by masters of the artH
Loud through whose majestic pagesI
Rolls the melody of agesI
Throb the harp strings of the heartH
-
And again the tongues of flameF
Start exulting and exclaimF
These are prophets bards and seersJ
In the horoscope of nationsK
Like ascendant constellationsK
They control the coming yearsL
-
But the night wind cries DespairB
Those who walk with feet of airB
Leave no long enduring marksM
At God's forges incandescentN
Mighty hammers beat incessantN
These are but the flying sparksM
-
Dust are all the hands that wroughtO
Books are sepulchres of thoughtO
The dead laurels of the deadP
Rustle for a moment onlyQ
Like the withered leaves in lonelyQ
Churchyards at some passing treadP
-
Suddenly the flame sinks downR
Sink the rumors of renownR
And alone the night wind drearB
Clamors louder wilder vaguerB
'T is the brand of MeleagerB
Dying on the hearth stone hereB
-
And I answer Though it beQ
Why should that discomfort meQ
No endeavor is in vainS
Its reward is in the doingT
And the rapture of pursuingT
Is the prize the vanquished gainS
