Three Kings came riding from far awayA
Melchior and Gaspar and BaltasarB
Three Wise Men out of the East were theyA
And they travelled by night and they slept by dayA
For their guide was a beautiful wonderful starB
-
The star was so beautiful large and clearB
That all the other stars of the skyC
Became a white mist in the atmosphereB
And by this they knew that the coming was nearB
Of the Prince foretold in the prophecyD
-
Three caskets they bore on their saddle bowsE
Three caskets of gold with golden keysF
Their robes were of crimson silk with rowsG
Of bells and pomegranates and furbelowsG
Their turbans like blossoming almond treesG
-
And so the Three Kings rode into the WestH
Through the dusk of the night over hill and dellI
And sometimes they nodded with beard on breastH
And sometimes talked as they paused to restH
With the people they met at some wayside wellI
-
Of the child that is born said BaltasarB
Good people I pray you tell us the newsG
For we in the East have seen his starB
And have ridden fast and have ridden farB
To find and worship the King of the JewsG
-
And the people answered You ask in vainJ
We know of no King but Herod the GreatK
They thought the Wise Men were men insaneJ
As they spurred their horses across the plainJ
Like riders in haste who cannot waitK
-
And when they came to JerusalemL
Herod the Great who had heard this thingM
Sent for the Wise Men and questioned themN
And said Go down unto BethlehemN
And bring me tidings of this new kingM
-
So they rode away and the star stood stillO
The only one in the grey of mornP
Yes it stopped it stood still of its own free willO
Right over Bethlehem on the hillO
The city of David where Christ was bornP
-
And the Three Kings rode through the gate and the guardQ
Through the silent street till their horses turnedR
And neighed as they entered the great inn yardQ
But the windows were closed and the doors were barredQ
And only a light in the stable burnedR
-
And cradled there in the scented hayA
In the air made sweet by the breath of kineP
The little child in the manger layA
The child that would be king one dayA
Of a kingdom not human but divineP
-
His mother Mary of NazarethS
Sat watching beside his place of restH
Watching the even flow of his breathT
For the joy of life and the terror of deathT
Were mingled together in her breastH
-
They laid their offerings at his feetU
The gold was their tribute to a KingM
The frankincense with its odor sweetU
Was for the Priest the ParacleteU
The myrrh for the body's buryingM
-
And the mother wondered and bowed her headU
And sat as still as a statue of stoneP
Her heart was troubled yet comfortedU
Remembering what the Angel had saidU
Of an endless reign and of David's throneP
-
Then the Kings rode out of the city gateU
With a clatter of hoofs in proud arrayA
But they went not back to Herod the GreatU
For they knew his malice and feared his hateU
And returned to their homes by another wayA
