Beside the ungathered rice he layA
His sickle in his handB
His breast was bare his matted hairC
Was buried in the sandB
Again in the mist and shadow of sleepD
He saw his Native LandB
-
Wide through the landscape of his dreamsE
The lordly Niger flowedF
Beneath the palm trees on the plainG
Once more a king he strodeF
And heard the tinkling caravansH
Descend the mountain roadF
-
He saw once more his dark eyed queenI
Among her children standB
They clasped his neck they kissed his cheeksJ
They held him by the handB
A tear burst from the sleeper's lidsK
And fell into the sandB
-
And then at furious speed he rodeF
Along the Niger's bankL
His bridle reins were golden chainsM
And with a martial clankL
At each leap he could feel his scabbard of steelN
Smiting his stallion's flankL
-
Before him like a blood red flagO
The bright flamingoes flewP
From morn till night he followed their flightQ
O'er plains where the tamarind grewP
Till he saw the roofs of Caffre hutsR
And the ocean rose to viewP
-
At night he heard the lion roarS
And the hyena screamT
And the river horse as he crushed the reedsU
Beside some hidden streamT
And it passed like a glorious roll of drumsV
Through the triumph of his dreamT
-
The forests with their myriad tonguesW
Shouted of libertyX
And the Blast of the Desert cried aloudY
With a voice so wild and freeX
That he started in his sleep and smiledZ
At their tempestuous gleeX
-
He did not feel the driver's whipA2
Nor the burning heat of dayA
For Death had illumined the Land of SleepD
And his lifeless body layA
A worn out fetter that the soulB2
Had broken and thrown awayA
