The Sermon Of St. Francis Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABC DDEE FFGH IIJJ KKLL MMNN OOAA PPQQ GGRS

Up soared the lark into the airA
A shaft of song a winged prayerA
As if a soul released from painB
Were flying back to heaven againC
-
St Francis heard it was to himD
An emblem of the SeraphimD
The upward motion of the fireE
The light the heat the heart's desireE
-
Around Assisi's convent gateF
The birds God's poor who cannot waitF
From moor and mere and darksome woodG
Came flocking for their dole of foodH
-
O brother birds St Francis saidI
Ye come to me and ask for breadI
But not with bread alone to dayJ
Shall ye be fed and sent awayJ
-
Ye shall be fed ye happy birdsK
With manna of celestial wordsK
Not mine though mine they seem to beL
Not mine though they be spoken through meL
-
O doubly are ye bound to praiseM
The great Creator in your laysM
He giveth you your plumes of downN
Your crimson hoods your cloaks of brownN
-
He giveth you your wings to flyO
And breathe a purer air on highO
And careth for you everywhereA
Who for yourselves so little careA
-
With flutter of swift wings and songsP
Together rose the feathered throngsP
And singing scattered far apartQ
Deep peace was in St Francis' heartQ
-
He knew not if the brotherhoodG
His homily had understoodG
He only knew that to one earR
The meaning of his words was clearS
