The Slaver in the broad lagoon	A
Lay moored with idle sail	B
He waited for the rising moon	A
And for the evening gale	B

Under the shore his boat was tied	C
And all her listless crew	D
Watched the gray alligator slide	C
Into the still bayou	D

Odors of orange flowers and spice	E
Reached them from time to time	F
Like airs that breathe from Paradise	E
Upon a world of crime	F

Then pale as death grew the maiden's cheek	N

To be his slave and paramour	O
