In Mather's Magnalia ChristiA
Of the old colonial timeB
May be found in prose the legendC
That is here set down in rhymeB
A ship sailed from New HavenD
And the keen and frosty airsE
That filled her sails at partingF
Were heavy with good men's prayersE
'O Lord if it be thy pleasure'G
Thus prayed the old divineH
'To bury our friends in the oceanD
Take them for they are thine 'I
But Master Lamberton mutteredJ
And under his breath said heA
'This ship is so crank and waltyJ
I fear our grave she will be 'I
And the ships that came from EnglandJ
When the winter months were goneK
Brought no tidings of this vesselL
Nor of Master LambertonD
This put the people to prayingF
That the Lord would let them hearG
What in his greater wisdomM
He had done with friends so dearG
And at last their prayers were answeredJ
It was in the month of JuneN
An hour before the sunsetJ
Of a windy afternoonN
When steadily steering landwardJ
A ship was seen belowO
And they knew it was Lamberton MasterG
Who sailed so long agoO
On she came with a cloud of canvasP
Right against the wind that blewQ
Until the eye could distinguishR
The faces of the crewQ
Then fell her straining topmastsP
Hanging tangled in the shroudsP
And her sails were loosened and liftedJ
And blown away like cloudsP
And the masts with all their riggingF
Fell slowly one by oneD
And the hulk dilated and vanishedJ
As a sea mist in the sunD
And the people who saw this marvelL
Each said unto his friendJ
That this was the mould of their vesselL
And thus her tragic endJ
And the pastor of the villageS
Gave thanks to God in prayerG
That to quiet their troubled spiritsP
He had sent this Ship of AirG
