The Open Window Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB ADED FGAG AHAH AIEI JKLK

The old house by the lindensA
Stood silent in the shadeB
And on the gravelled pathwayC
The light and shadow playedB
-
I saw the nursery windowsA
Wide open to the airD
But the faces of the childrenE
They were no longer thereD
-
The large Newfoundland house dogF
Was standing by the doorG
He looked for his little playmatesA
Who would return no moreG
-
They walked not under the lindensA
They played not in the hallH
But shadow and silence and sadnessA
Were hanging over allH
-
The birds sang in the branchesA
With sweet familiar toneI
But the voices of the childrenE
Will be heard in dreams aloneI
-
And the boy that walked beside meJ
He could not understandK
Why closer in mine ah closerL
I pressed his warm soft handK
