Mounted on Kyrat strong and fleetA
His chestnut steed with four white feetA
Roushan Beg called KurroglouB
Son of the road and bandit chiefC
Seeking refuge and reliefC
Up the mountain pathway flewB
-
Such was Kyrat's wondrous speedD
Never yet could any steedD
Reach the dust cloud in his courseE
More than maiden more than wifeF
More than gold and next to lifeF
Roushan the Robber loved his horseE
-
In the land that lies beyondG
Erzeroum and TrebizondG
Garden girt his fortress stoodG
Plundered khan or caravanH
Journeying north from KoordistanH
Gave him wealth and wine and foodG
-
Seven hundred and fourscoreI
Men at arms his livery woreI
Did his bidding night and dayG
Now through regions all unknownH
He was wandering lost aloneH
Seeking without guide his wayG
-
Suddenly the pathway endsJ
Sheer the precipice descendsJ
Loud the torrent roars unseenH
Thirty feet from side to sideG
Yawns the chasm on air must rideG
He who crosses this ravineH
-
Following close in his pursuitG
At the precipice's footG
Reyhan the Arab of OrfahF
Halted with his hundred menH
Shouting upward from the glenH
La Illah illa AllahB
-
Gently Roushan Beg caressedG
Kyrat's forehead neck and breastG
Kissed him upon both his eyesK
Sang to him in his wild wayG
As upon the topmost sprayG
Sings a bird before it fliesK
-
O my Kyrat O my steedG
Round and slender as a reedG
Carry me this peril throughI
Satin housings shall be thineH
Shoes of gold O Kyrat mineH
O thou soul of KurroglouB
-
Soft thy skin as silken skeinH
Soft as woman's hair thy maneH
Tender are thine eyes and trueI
All thy hoofs like ivory shineH
Polished bright O life of mineH
Leap and rescue KurroglouB
-
Kyrat then the strong and fleetG
Drew together his four white feetG
Paused a moment on the vergeL
Measured with his eye the spaceM
And into the air's embraceM
Leaped as leaps the ocean surgeL
-
As the ocean surge o'er sandG
Bears a swimmer safe to landG
Kyrat safe his rider boreI
Rattling down the deep abyssN
Fragments of the precipiceO
Rolled like pebbles on a shoreI
-
Roushan's tasselled cap of redG
Trembled not upon his headG
Careless sat he and uprightG
Neither hand nor bridle shookP
Nor his head he turned to lookP
As he galloped out of sightG
-
Flash of harness in the airI
Seen a moment like the glareI
Of a sword drawn from its sheathQ
Thus the phantom horseman passedG
And the shadow that he castG
Leaped the cataract underneathQ
-
Reyhan the Arab held his breathR
While this vision of life and deathR
Passed above him AllahuS
Cried he In all KoordistanH
Lives there not so brave a manH
As this Robber KurroglouB
