The Herons Of Elmwood Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Warm and still is the summer nightA
As here by the river's brink I wanderB
White overhead are the stars and whiteA
The glimmering lamps on the hillside yonderB
-
Silent are all the sounds of dayC
Nothing I hear but the chirp of cricketsD
And the cry of the herons winging their wayC
O'er the poet's house in the Elmwood thicketsD
-
Call to him herons as slowly you passE
To your roosts in the haunts of the exiled thrushesF
Sing him the song of the green morassE
And the tides that water the reeds and rushesF
-
Sing him the mystical Song of the HernG
And the secret that baffles our utmost seekingH
For only a sound of lament we discernG
And cannot interpret the words you are speakingH
-
Sing of the air and the wild delightA
Of wings that uplift and winds that uphold youI
The joy of freedom the rapture of flightA
Through the drift of the floating mists that infold youI
-
Of the landscape lying so far belowJ
With its towns and rivers and desert placesF
And the splendor of light above and the glowJ
Of the limitless blue ethereal spacesF
-
Ask him if songs of the TroubadoursF
Or of Minnesingers in old black letterB
Sound in his ears more sweet than yoursF
And if yours are not sweeter and wilder and betterB
-
Sing to him say to him here at his gateK
Where the boughs of the stately elms are meetingH
Some one hath lingered to meditateK
And send him unseen this friendly greetingH
-
That many another hath done the sameL
Though not by a sound was the silence brokenM
The surest pledge of a deathless nameL
Is the silent homage of thoughts unspokenM
