Sir Oluf he rideth over the plainA
Full seven miles broad and seven miles wideB
But never ah never can meet with the manC
A tilt with him dare rideB
-
He saw under the hill sideB
A Knight full well equippedD
His steed was black his helm was barredE
He was riding at full speedF
-
He wore upon his spursG
Twelve little golden birdsH
Anon he spurred his steed with a clangI
And there sat all the birds and sangI
-
He wore upon his mailJ
Twelve little golden wheelsK
Anon in eddies the wild wind blewL
And round and round the wheels they flewL
-
He wore before his breastM
A lance that was poised in restM
And it was sharper than diamond stoneN
It made Sir Oluf's heart to groanN
-
He wore upon his helmO
A wreath of ruddy goldP
And that gave him the Maidens ThreeQ
The youngest was fair to beholdP
-
Sir Oluf questioned the Knight eftsoonN
If he were come from heaven downN
'Art thou Christ of Heaven ' quoth heQ
'So will I yield me unto thee '-
-
'I am not Christ the GreatR
Thou shalt not yield thee yetS
I am an Unknown KnightT
Three modest maidens have me bedight '-
-
'Art thou a Knight electedU
And have three Maidens thee bedightU
So shalt thou ride a tilt this dayU
For all the Maidens' honour '-
-
The first tilt they together rodeU
They put their steeds to the testU
The second tilt they together rodeU
They proved their manhood bestU
-
The third tilt they together rodeU
Neither of them would yieldU
The fourth tilt they together rodeU
They both fell on the fieldU
-
Now lie the Lords upon the plainN
And their blood runs unto deathV
Now sit the Maidens in the high towerW
The youngest sorrows till deathV
