The day is done and the darknessA
Falls from the wings of NightB
As a feather is wafted downwardC
From an eagle in his flightB
-
I see the lights of the villageD
Gleam through the rain and the mistE
And a feeling of sadness comes o'er meF
That my soul cannot resistE
-
A feeling of sadness and longingG
That is not akin to painH
And resembles sorrow onlyF
As the mist resembles the rainH
-
Come read to me some poemI
Some simple and heartfelt layJ
That shall soothe this restless feelingG
And banish the thoughts of dayJ
-
Not from the grand old mastersK
Not from the bards sublimeL
Whose distant footsteps echoM
Through the corridors of TimeL
-
For like strains of martial musicN
Their mighty thoughts suggestO
Life's endless toil and endeavorP
And tonight I long for restO
-
Read from some humbler poetQ
Whose songs gushed from his heartR
As showers from the clouds of summerP
Or tears from the eyelids startR
-
Who through long days of laborP
And nights devoid of easeS
Still heard in his soul the musicN
Of wonderful melodiesS
-
Such songs have a power to quietQ
The restless pulse of careT
And comes like the benedictionU
That follows after prayerT
-
Then read from the treasured volumeV
The poem of thy choiceW
And lend to the rhyme of the poetQ
The beauty of thy voiceW
-
And the night shall be filled with musicN
And the cares that infest the dayJ
Shall fold their tents like the ArabsX
And as silently steal awayJ
