The Child Asleep. (from The French) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF CACA HIJI

Sweet babe true portrait of thy father's faceA
Sleep on the bosom that thy lips have pressedB
Sleep little one and closely gently placeA
Thy drowsy eyelid on thy mother's breastB
-
Upon that tender eye my little friendC
Soft sleep shall come that cometh not to meD
I watch to see thee nourish thee defendC
'Tis sweet to watch for thee alone for theeD
-
His arms fall down sleep sits upon his browE
His eye is closed he sleeps nor dreams of harmF
Wore not his cheek the apple's ruddy glowG
Would you not say he slept on Death's cold armF
-
Awake my boy I tremble with affrightC
Awake and chase this fatal thought UncloseA
Thine eye but for one moment on the lightC
Even at the price of thine give me reposeA
-
Sweet error he but slept I breathe againH
Come gentle dreams the hour of sleep beguileI
Oh when shall he for whom I sigh in vainJ
Beside me watch to see thy waking smileI
