'Twas Pentecost the Feast of GladnessA
When woods and fields put off all sadnessA
Thus began the King and spakeB
So from the hallsA
Of ancient Hofburgh's wallsA
A luxuriant Spring shall breakB
-
Drums and trumpets echo loudlyC
Wave the crimson banners proudlyC
From balcony the King looked onD
In the play of spearsA
Fell all the cavaliersA
Before the monarch's stalwart sonE
-
To the barrier of the fightF
Rode at last a sable KnightF
Sir Knight your name and scutcheon sayA
Should I speak it hereG
Ye would stand aghast with fearH
I am a Prince of mighty swayA
-
When he rode into the listsA
The arch of heaven grew black with mistsA
And the castle 'gan to rockI
At the first blowJ
Fell the youth from saddle bowK
Hardly rises from the shockI
-
Pipe and viol call the dancesA
Torch light through the high hall glancesA
Waves a mighty shadow inL
With manner blandM
Doth ask the maiden's handM
Doth with her the dance beginL
-
Danced in sable iron sarkN
Danced a measure weird and darkN
Coldly clasped her limbs aroundO
From breast and hairP
Down fall from her the fairP
Flowerets faded to the groundO
-
To the sumptuous banquet cameQ
Every Knight and every DameQ
'Twixt son and daughter all distraughtR
With mournful mindS
The ancient King reclinedS
Gazed at them in silent thoughtR
-
Pale the children both did lookT
But the guest a beaker tookT
Golden wine will make you wholeU
The children drankV
Gave many a courteous thankV
Oh that draught was very coolW
-
Each the father's breast embracesA
Son and daughter and their facesA
Colourless grow utterlyC
Whichever wayA
Looks the fear struck father greyA
He beholds his children dieX
-
Woe the blessed children bothY
Takest thou in the joy of youthZ
Take me too the joyless fatherA2
Spake the grim GuestB2
From his hollow cavernous breastB2
Roses in the spring I gatherA2
