What say the Bells of San BlasA
To the ships that southward passB
From the harbor of MazatlanC
To them it is nothing moreD
Than the sound of surf on the shoreD
Nothing more to master or manC
-
But to me a dreamer of dreamsE
To whom what is and what seemsE
Are often one and the sameF
The Bells of San Blas to meG
Have a strange wild melodyG
And are something more than a nameF
-
For bells are the voice of the churchH
They have tones that touch and searchH
The hearts of young and oldI
One sound to all yet eachJ
Lends a meaning to their speechJ
And the meaning is manifoldI
-
They are a voice of the PastK
Of an age that is fading fastK
Of a power austere and grandL
When the flag of Spain unfurledM
Its folds o'er this western worldM
And the Priest was lord of the landL
-
The chapel that once looked downC
On the little seaport townC
Has crumbled into the dustN
And on oaken beams belowO
The bells swing to and froO
And are green with mould and rustN
-
'Is then the old faith dead '-
They say 'and in its steadP
Is some new faith proclaimedQ
That we are forced to remainC
Naked to sun and rainC
Unsheltered and ashamedQ
-
'Once in our tower aloofR
We rang over wall and roofR
Our warnings and our complaintsS
And round about us thereT
The white doves filled the airT
Like the white souls of the saintsS
-
'The saints Ah have they grownC
Forgetful of their ownC
Are they asleep or deadP
That open to the skyU
Their ruined Missions lieU
No longer tenantedP
-
'Oh bring us back once moreD
The vanished days of yoreD
When the world with faith was filledP
Bring back the fervid zealV
The hearts of fire and steelV
The hands that believe and buildP
-
'Then from our tower againC
We will send over land and mainC
Our voices of commandP
Like exiled kings who returnC
To their thrones and the people learnC
That the Priest is lord of the land '-
-
O Bells of San Blas in vainC
Ye call back the Past againC
The Past is deaf to your prayerT
Out of the shadows of nightP
The world rolls into lightP
It is daybreak everywhereT
