President Garfield Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDBEDDEFGHIGH

E venni dal martirio a questa paceA
-
These words the poet heard in ParadiseB
Uttered by one who bravely dying hereC
In the true faith was living in that sphereD
Where the celestial cross of sacrificeB
Spread its protecting arms athwart the skiesE
And set thereon like jewels crystal clearD
The souls magnanimous that knew not fearD
Flashed their effulgence on his dazzled eyesE
Ah me how dark the discipline of painF
Were not the suffering followed by the senseG
Of infinite rest and infinite releaseH
This is our consolation and againI
A great soul cries to us in our suspenseG
I came from martyrdom unto this peaceH
