Often I think of the beautiful townA
That is seated by the seaB
Often in thought go up and downA
The pleasant streets of that dear old townA
And my youth comes back to meB
And a verse of a Lapland songC
Is haunting my memory stillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsE
-
I can see the shadowy lines of its treesF
And catch in sudden gleamsG
The sheen of the far surrounding seasF
And islands that were the HesperidesF
Of all my boyish dreamsF
And the burden of that old songC
It murmurs and whispers stillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsF
-
I remember the black wharves and the shipsF
And the sea tides tossing freeB
And Spanish sailors with bearded lipsF
And the beauty and mystery of the shipsF
And the magic of the seaB
And the voice of that wayward songC
Is singing and saying stillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsF
-
I remember the bulwarks by the shoreH
And the fort upon the hillD
The sunrise gun with its hollow roarH
The drum beat repeated o'er and o'erI
And the bugle wild and shrillD
And the music of that old songC
Throbs in my memory stillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsF
-
I remember the sea fight far awayJ
How it thundered o'er the tideK
And the dead captains as they layJ
In their graves o'erlooking the tranquil bayJ
Where they in battle diedK
And the sound of that mournful songC
Goes through me with a thrillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsF
-
I can see the breezy dome of grovesF
The shadows of Deering's WoodsF
And the friendships old and the early lovesF
Come back with a Sabbath sound as of dovesF
In quiet neighborhoodsF
And the verse of that sweet old songC
It flutters and murmurs stillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsF
-
I remember the gleams and glooms that dartL
Across the school boy's brainM
The song and the silence in the heartL
That in part are prophecies and in partL
Are longings wild and vainM
And the voice of that fitful songC
Sings on and is never stillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsF
-
There are things of which I may not speakN
There are dreams that cannot dieO
There are thoughts that make the strong heart weakN
And bring a pallor into the cheekN
And a mist before the eyeO
And the words of that fatal songC
Come over me like a chillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsF
-
Strange to me now are the forms I meetP
When I visit the dear old townA
But the native air is pure and sweetP
And the trees that o'ershadow each well known streetP
As they balance up and downA
Are singing the beautiful songC
Are sighing and whispering stillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsF
-
And Deering's Woods are fresh and fairQ
And with joy that is almost painM
My heart goes back to wander thereQ
And among the dreams of the days that wereI
I find my lost youth againR
And the strange and beautiful songC
The groves are repeating it stillD
A boy's will is the wind's willD
And the thoughts of youth are long long thoughtsF
