When the dying flame of dayA
Through the chancel shot its rayA
Far the glimmering tapers shedB
Faint light on the cowled headB
And the censer burning swungC
Where before the altar hungC
The crimson banner that with prayerD
Had been consecrated thereD
And the nuns' sweet hymn was heard the whileE
Sung low in the dim mysterious aisleE
-
Take thy banner May it waveF
Proudly o'er the good and braveF
When the battle's distant wailG
Breaks the sabbath of our valeG
When the clarion's music thrillsH
To the hearts of these lone hillsH
When the spear in conflict shakesI
And the strong lance shivering breaksI
-
Take thy banner and beneathJ
The battle cloud's encircling wreathJ
Guard it till our homes are freeK
Guard it God will prosper theeK
In the dark and trying hourL
In the breaking forth of powerL
In the rush of steeds and menM
His right hand will shield thee thenM
-
Take thy banner But when nightN
Closes round the ghastly fightN
If the vanquished warrior bowO
Spare him By our holy vowO
By our prayers and many tearsP
By the mercy that endearsP
Spare him he our love hath sharedQ
Spare him as thou wouldst be sparedQ
-
Take thy banner and if e'erL
Thou shouldst press the soldier's bierR
And the muffled drum should beatS
To the tread of mournful feetS
Then this crimson flag shall beK
Martial cloak and shroud for theeK
-
The warrior took that banner proudT
And it was his martial cloak and shroudT
