Haunted Houses. (birds Of Passage. Flight The First) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

All houses wherein men have lived and diedA
Are haunted houses Through the open doorsB
The harmless phantoms on their errands glideA
With feet that make no sound upon the floorsB
-
We meet them at the doorway on the stairC
Along the passages they come and goD
Impalpable impressions on the airC
A sense of something moving to and froD
-
There are more guests at table than the hostsE
Invited the illuminated hallF
Is thronged with quiet inoffensive ghostsE
As silent as the pictures on the wallF
-
The stranger at my fireside cannot seeG
The forms I see nor hear the sounds I hearH
He but perceives what is while unto meG
All that has been is visible and clearI
-
We have no title deeds to house or landsJ
Owners and occupants of earlier datesK
From graves forgotten stretch their dusty handsJ
And hold in mortmain still their old estatesK
-
The spirit world around this world of senseL
Floats like an atmosphere and everywhereC
Wafts through these earthly mists and vapors denseL
A vital breath of more ethereal airC
-
Our little lives are kept in equipoiseL
By opposite attractions and desiresL
The struggle of the instinct that enjoysL
And the more noble instinct that aspiresL
-
These perturbations this perpetual jarM
Of earthly wants and aspirations highN
Come from the influence of an unseen starM
An undiscovered planet in our skyN
-
And as the moon from some dark gate of cloudO
Throws o'er the sea a floating bridge of lightP
Across whose trembling planks our fancies crowdO
Into the realm of mystery and nightP
-
So from the world of spirits there descendsL
A bridge of light connecting it with thisL
O'er whose unsteady floor that sways and bendsL
Wander our thoughts above the dark abyssL
