Gaspar Becerra Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE CGHG IJKJ HILI MNON PQAQ

By his evening fire the artistA
Pondered o'er his secret shameB
Baffled weary and disheartenedC
Still he mused and dreamed of fameB
-
'T was an image of the VirginD
That had tasked his utmost skillE
But alas his fair idealF
Vanished and escaped him stillE
-
From a distant Eastern islandC
Had the precious wood been broughtG
Day and night the anxious masterH
At his toil untiring wroughtG
-
Till discouraged and despondingI
Sat he now in shadows deepJ
And the day's humiliationK
Found oblivion in sleepJ
-
Then a voice cried Rise O masterH
From the burning brand of oakI
Shape the thought that stirs within theeL
And the startled artist wokeI
-
Woke and from the smoking embersM
Seized and quenched the glowing woodN
And therefrom he carved an imageO
And he saw that it was goodN
-
O thou sculptor painter poetP
Take this lesson to thy heartQ
That is best which lieth nearestA
Shape from that thy work of artQ
