When the hours of Day are numberedA
And the voices of the NightB
Wake the better soul that slumberedB
To a holy calm delightB
-
Ere the evening lamps are lightedB
And like phantoms grim and tallC
Shadows from the fitful firelightB
Dance upon the parlor wallC
-
Then the forms of the departedB
Enter at the open doorD
The beloved the true heartedB
Come to visit me once moreD
-
He the young and strong who cherishedB
Noble longings for the strifeE
By the roadside fell and perishedB
Weary with the march of lifeE
-
They the holy ones and weaklyF
Who the cross of suffering boreD
Folded their pale hands so meeklyF
Spake with us on earth no moreD
-
And with them the Being BeauteousG
Who unto my youth was givenH
More than all things else to love meF
And is now a saint in heavenH
-
With a slow and noiseless footstepI
Comes that messenger divineJ
Takes the vacant chair beside meF
Lays her gentle hand in mineJ
-
And she sits and gazes at meF
With those deep and tender eyesG
Like the stars so still and saint likeK
Looking downward from the skiesG
-
Uttered not yet comprehendedB
Is the spirit's voiceless prayerL
Soft rebukes in blessings endedB
Breathing from her lips of airL
-
Oh though oft depressed and lonelyF
All my fears are laid asideB
If I but remember onlyF
Such as these have lived and diedB
