When winter winds are piercing chillA
And through the hawthorn blows the galeB
With solemn feet I tread the hillA
That overbrows the lonely valeB
-
O'er the bare upland and awayC
Through the long reach of desert woodsD
The embracing sunbeams chastely playC
And gladden these deep solitudesD
-
Where twisted round the barren oakE
The summer vine in beauty clungF
And summer winds the stillness brokeE
The crystal icicle is hungF
-
Where from their frozen urns mute springsD
Pour out the river's gradual tideG
Shrilly the skater's iron ringsD
And voices fill the woodland sideG
-
Alas how changed from the fair sceneH
When birds sang out their mellow layC
And winds were soft and woods were greenH
And the song ceased not with the dayC
-
But still wild music is abroadI
Pale desert woods within your crowdJ
And gathering winds in hoarse accordK
Amid the vocal reeds pipe loudJ
-
Chill airs and wintry winds my earL
Has grown familiar with your songM
I hear it in the opening yearN
I listen and it cheers me longM
