Garlands upon his graveA
And flowers upon his hearseB
And to the tender heart and braveA
The tribute of this verseB
-
His was the troubled lifeC
The conflict and the painD
The grief the bitterness of strifeC
The honor without stainD
-
Like Winkelried he tookE
Into his manly breastF
The sheaf of hostile spears and brokeG
A path for the oppressedF
-
Then from the fatal fieldH
Upon a nation's heartI
Borne like a warrior on his shieldH
So should the brave departI
-
Death takes us by surpriseJ
And stays our hurrying feetK
The great design unfinished liesJ
Our lives are incompleteK
-
But in the dark unknownL
Perfect their circles seemM
Even as a bridge's arch of stoneL
Is rounded in the streamM
-
Alike are life and deathN
When life in death survivesO
And the uninterrupted breathN
Inspires a thousand livesP
-
Were a star quenched on highQ
For ages would its lightR
Still travelling downward from the skyQ
Shine on our mortal sightR
-
So when a great man diesJ
For years beyond our kenS
The light he leaves behind him liesJ
Upon the paths of menS
